Berner Life

Big Friends

Spring is in the air!
In the morning when I go outside,
I can hear the birds singing!

Robins,

Bluebirds,

Swallows,

Sparrows,and so many others.
The grass is beginning to spring up!
Hillside, valley, and canyon alike are turning green!

I love it!

One of my favorite pass times is to read the Morning and Evening Post.
Yep, the best kind there is.

This is how it works.
I go outside and start walking, nose to the ground...

"...Oh Klondike the deer and his friends came by hear last night..."

"...And what do ya know,
Pochet the Gopher was at his hole just seven minutes ago..."
"...Oh wow! 3 hours ago Ranger the Coyote caught a mouse here!..."

"...Oooo Sneak the Cougar and her cubs walked over this ditch just yesterday!..."

...and so on and so forth...

Well this evening I was reading the Evening Post,
up at the end of our driveway,
when all of a sudden I looked
and there down the hill was Klondike the Deer and his friends
or so I thought.
I wanted to go say "Hi" so I bounded down the hill towards them.

When I got about 100 yards away I realized that it was not Klondike and his friends.

Instead it was Regal Elk and his friends grazing peacefully on the lush pasture.

And they were looking right at me.

I stopped right in my tracks; tail slightly tucked,
then plopped down on the grass and waited.

Believe me those boys are BIG!

I mean 700 to 1,200 pounds...um...5 feet tall...uh...8-10 feet long...
They got big feet and antlers too.
I wasn't about to get to close cause they can have a short temper too.

I kinda wanted to play too...cause they kinda look like Klondike the Deer
whom I have played with before.
But these boys didn't run away like Klondike's friends do.

Then I had an idea.
Maybe they would play tag with me too.

So I jumped up and raced down the hill towards them.

But instead of playing they just spooked and started to run away.

Then I remembered what Daneè is teaching me.
When I'm trying to herd the Kitties and they get scared,
she give me a long whistle which means I'm supposed to stop and lay down.
Then the kitties don't get so scared and they stop running away.

So I plopped down on the edge of the lawn...

...and it worked! They stopped running and looked at me for a bit,
then went back to grazing.
So until next time enjoy another epsode of

"The Life of a Mountain Berner"
from me and My Big Friends.

School Work
February 6, 2013
Dog School! I love it.

Daneè is teaching me to herd
...yea...well we don't have sheep...
but she's teaching me the basics.
Here's some of the things I have learned.

She gives me two short whistles and says, "Walk on,"
and I know that that means I'm supposed to get up and walk.
She's taught me to stay about 10-15 feet behind her.

I have to watch and listen carefully
because she will all of a sudden she will give me this really sharp whistle
(it's loud enough to call the cows home clear from the Canton of Bern),
then I know that I'm supposed to stop real fast and lay down.

Then she comes over and gives me my favorite whistle;
it is a soft whistle that means that I did a good job.

Then she pets me and tells me what a good job I did
and I know she is pleased with me.

You see why I love my school so much.
Sometimes it is a bit confusing but Daneè tries to make real simple.
Right now Daneè is teaching me to "Come by."
But that'll have to wait for another time.
So good-bye for now
and I hope you enjoyed another episode of
"The Life of a Mountain Berner"

Mountain Top Hike
January 26, 2013

It was a wonderful day to take a hike.
Of course I love taking a hike any day.

The fresh air and exercise makes me feel so good.

The mountains to the east were I live.
I am one blessed dog to live where I do.

Foggy valley below.
Oh how glad I am that I don't live down there
in that smog!

Hiking over the hill.

More rolling hills and wheat fields.

The view from the top looking back where we came from.

The view From the top!

What a gorgeous sunset.

A little farm house in the draw below.

With the sun having set
the fog is rolling in so we'd better head home
before it gets too dark.
So good-bye for now.
I hope you enjoyed this episode of
"The Life of a Mountain Berner"
